In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Embrace the Ick.”
Think of something that truly repulses you. Hold that thought until your skin squirm’s. Now, write a glowing puff piece about it’s amazing merits.
For this prompt I thought about something so repulsive yet has merit and is uniquely helpful and great for the environment that can be considered a puff piece.
Several months ago, I was traveling along a single lane road in Southwest Florida, paralleling the Everglades. I passed a copious deceased feral hog, of at least 50-pounds or more on the shoulder of the road. Visually, it appeared the animal was struck by a vehicle of some type.
As the carrion lay on the road, I thought of how sickening it was for the driver who collided with the poor feral hog, who was possibly just trying to cross the road when its life abruptly ended.
I continued along the road and did not give the site another thought, until 45 minutes later upon my return trip. As I approached the scene, I could see fifteen or twenty Turkey Vultures completing the cycle of life. I slowed down and drove slightly into the oncoming lane to prevent striking Mother-Natures cleanup crew.
However, as I passed, I could see the crew had completely devoured the carrion and were standing around like finished contestants, of New York City’s Coney Island, 4th, of July, hotdog eating contest.
Of course, the site is disgusting to the average human, however, what the Turkey Vultures were doing was the purest form of Mother-Nature’s cycle of life. The effortless beauty of how the cycle of life continues with a creature most find disgusting, yet is efficient in accomplishing a job most humans would find most disgusting and repulsive of all clean up jobs.
The beauty of Mother-Nature surrounds us everyday, all over the world, yet the merits of this beauty are rarely noticed and not thought of except by the Turkey Vulture.
