The Transporter”

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “The Transporter.”

Tell us about a sensation — a taste, a smell, a piece of music — that transports you back to childhood.

During my early childhood, there was nothing like a lunch time peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich. Its unique texture, beginning with the first bite of softness of the two slices of white Wonder bread, then the soothing flavor of peanut butter and grape jelly filling my mouth, always brought a smile to my face.

When my mother gave me the lunch time sandwich, it highlighted a sultry summer with a mid day break, after a morning of playing in my backyard. I would sit on my bicycle, pretending I rode several miles to get this mid day treat. After finishing the sandwich, I dip a couple of chocolate-chip cookies, into a cup of vitamin D milk, and quickly finishing the milk, to make a milk mustache.

The smell of freshly mowed grass, my dog “Rex” sitting patiently, waiting for me to give him a pinch of the sandwich, and the sounds of Sly and the Family Stone’s, “Hot Fun in the Summer Time” blaring from my teenage neighbors stereo, always transports me back to my early childhood.
