“If I had a Hammer or Mechanics’ tools”

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “If I Had a Hammer or Mechanics tools.”

If you could learn a trade — say carpentry, electrical work, roofing, landscaping, plumbing, flooring, drywall — you name it — what skill(s) would you love to have in your back pocket?

Many years ago, I was expected to become an auto mechanic, I attend classes while I was in high school and before the classes in high school, I worked at my fathers service station pumping gas, changing tires, changing oil, greasing fittings all before the age of thirteen. As the years passed I worked my way up to, installing brakes, completing tune-up, replacing exhaust pipes, repairing transmissions and replacing motors.

Over the years, I have imagined what if I had continued on the career track of becoming a mechanic. Yet, I wonder why I gave it up. Then in a flash I recall why, and it was I dated a girl who noticed the dirt under my finger nails which I realized was not cool. I put more effort into the marching band, sports and eventually went on to college and into the military.

I imagined, if I had the opportunity I would return to mechanics’ school to learn how hook up a computer to the car’s computer and diagnose the problem with the replacement of a computer module of sorts.

But, I think I will continue along the learning curve of writing as I know I cannot get dirt under my finger nails in this creative writing career field.

And of course, there are those nasty little things called ink cartridges for the ole computer….writing’s a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it! I enjoy sharing the journey with you.
