“Always Something There to Remind Me”

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Always Something There to Remind Me.”

A song comes on the radio and instantly, you’re transported to a different time and place. Which song(s) bring back memories for you and why? Be sure to mention the song, and describe the memory it evokes.

Lately, I have heard the comment “Song for the summer of 2015.” Each time I hear the comment, I immediately think of my all-time favorite summertime songs.

My top three songs of summertime begin with number three. 1999’s Len’s ” If You Steal My Sunshine.” Number two is the offical song of summer in the city of Philadelphia PA. Will Smith & D. J. Jazzy Jeffs’ 1991’s, “Summer Time.”

My number one song played continuously during the summer of 1973 when I was mere lad riding my 10- speed bicycle, with a large radio attached to the center post listening to the Isley Brothers, “Summer Breeze.”

A soulful rendition originally song by Seals and Croft in 1972. I was a middle schooler and I was “So Cool.”

“Summertime” is one of my all-time favorite summer songs, too!!! It really brings back a certain summer mood, if not actual memories (although I remember that video vividly!)

Also from 1973 – Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack – It doesn’t create a specific memory – more of a feeling – and the longing that someone could ever know me that well and what it would “feel’ like if they did. Sigh…
Glad to have discovered your blog through Blogging 201.

Now, I’m dating myself. I definitely remember everyone singing Robert Flacks song, Killing Me Softly. However, Lauren Hill covered the song in the 90’s and I feel in love with her version also. Great music will always return to touch the heart.

Ach, you are talking my era, Marty. Back in the day, when Will Smith was a rapper. I bet the young’uns don’t even know that, he’s such a movie star now. Thanks for sharing your grooves. I love the way they made me feel.

It is always a great summer song. My own children don’t recognize the history of most of the celebrities of today. Lol!

SO true, they have no idea. I was the same. (:

Favorite songs ..so many and some because they just are, as they make you feel happy and Joyous but Favorite 3 ….Blueberry Hill by Fats Domino was a favorite of my friend Josie who unfortunately passed in her early 30’s, a buxom lady, fun lady but when she danced so light and graceful and one of the songs which reminds me of her. Rock around the Clock I just love to rock..and Fooled around and Fell in Love by the one and only Rod Stewart and that doesn’t need an expo..lol…and so many more but you said 3:) And i’ll sneak in Summertime just because 🙂

I had the best time today when I came by to read your post! MUSIC IS the Medicine in my Soul! SO, you know I have to go and see what brought me back to where. 1st stop, because the Lady Calen from Impromptu Promptlings posted one of my very favorite early teenage years songs, this morning. So that brought me back right away to those days before wine and roses, when crushes were raging.
The song was “He’s A Rebel,” by The Crystals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_SXJ18EkNw

Then as the years went by, with my big brother influencing my musical tastes, I was thrilling to such great tunes as:

All Along The Watchtower – by the late great Jimi Hendrix
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XI_m9TLxcVE

The story here was my first (post Beatles concerts in ’62, then ’65), Madison Square Garden concert in 1969! That was one of the greatest years for concert going and music for me. Later, in September, I was hanging out at the old 1939/64 World’s Fair Grounds, at the New York State Pavilion listening to Santana, and Iron Butterfly.

The Iron Butterfly Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDoWtqIGUjY from the group of the same name, captured me in it’s chrysalis. It’s hard not to be transported back to the days when Woodstock was a shining light in a rather bleak and dark period in our history.

These songs are difficult not to think of as summer song, for sure.

So many more songs came flooding in but I don’t think I could fit them all in a comment 🙂

I thank you for this exquisite trip down memory lane, and for sharing your own amazing music with us all!

Music does have a way of connecting with memories. Play some Moody Blues and I know exactly where I was when I first heard it. Summer Breeze brings back a more light hearted time… which summer usually is. My husband and I will be driving along listening to music and a song will come on and we will relate the memories attached to it for each of us.

Music and memories are attached to our being and soul forevere.
