“Our House”

y In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Our House.”

What are the earliest memories of the place you lived in as a child? Describe your house. What did it look like? How did it smell? What did it sound like? Was it quiet like a library, or full of the noise of life? Tell us all about it, in as much detail as you can recall.

My earliest memories of my childhood home are of my backyard.

My backyard is where I stayed until my mother forced me inside to go to bed, or because she thought it was too cold to be outside. My backyard had everything I wanted or needed. I had my swing set with slide, pool, bicycle, and a red wagon. I had my spring loaded rocking horse to ride, (Metal) Tonka Trucks, dirt to play in, a tree to climb and my very own German Shepherd dog named Rex.

With, Rex, there was nothing in my backyard, I could not defend, attack or achieve with him at my side.

I ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches from the porch and washed it down with grape Kool-aid. I enjoyed apples, oranges, grapes, plums, and bananas. These were my candies and the original fruit roll-ups for me and Rex.

I searched for worms for fishing, burned ants into the concrete using the sun and a magnifying glass. I played cowboys and Indians, cops and robbers with a cap-gun and Rex never flinched from the sound of my cap gun.

Although, I have memories of roller skating and playing board games in my basement during the winter when my mother forced me inside. The dinner table memories of family meal where I hurriedly ate my food, so I could return outside and play in my backyard.  When I was inside my home, I often felt sad for Rex as he remained outside in his dog house.

I have memories of my bathroom where I was forced to bathe before bed and the memories of my bedroom where I quickly fell asleep dreaming of being outside.

My retirement lifestyle is very similar. I have my bicycle, kayak, golf clubs, fishing poles and various other outdoor toys. I simply love being outside enjoying nature.

However now, I enjoy my shower and my lovely comfortable bed a lot more. 🙂

  1. WOW!!! You really took me back to my childhood! And thank you for sharing yours! Mine was similar to yours in some ways–playing outside, climbing trees and fences, eating peanut butter & apple jelly sandwiches at my grandma’s house, riding my bike, playing kickball with my neighborhood friends–I could go on & on. Those were the good ol’ days, and I sure do miss them. Like you, now I’m retired and am truly enjoying it. I also love being outside enjoying nature & snapping all the pictures I can of it. Also like you, I now enjoy my bath and comfortable bed a lot more. 🙂 Thanks again for that fabulous trip down memory lane.
