“Take Care”

When you’re unwell, do you allow others to take care of  you, or do you prefer to soldier on alone? What does it take for you to ask for help?

I have been fortunate to have lived my life so far experiencing only a few health issues and I hope it continues, “knock on wood.”

As a small child from the age of three or four, I played outside everyday incurring lacerations, and scrapes.

The household injury rules were simple and fell into the following categories.
(A) Bleeding more than five minutes may be serious;
(B) If a bone is visible it serious.

My mother administered first aid easily and over time, I learned to clean my wounds with water, applying either Bactine or Neosporin with a band-aid.

So decades later when I dislocated my kneecap. My household injury rule was superseded when I recognized my knee cap was not occupying its usual spot.

After surgery to repair the dislocation, my mother arrived to care for me for a week.
When it comes to caring for myself, I soldier on alone never asking for help unless completely immobile.

    I’m a bit that way. It comes from living alone (well, I have two cats, and they do what they can, but it’s limited). Even if I need more help, it can be hard to come by. Interesting how your lifestyle, chosen or not, shapes your behavior. I’m not sure I’d be so independent if I were married and had kids…what am I saying… what would be different then? Ha ha.
