In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Polite Company.”

“It’s never a good idea to discuss religion or politics with people you don’t really know.” Agree or disagree?

jefferson

For over ten years I worked at my father’s business, and there was an important rule for customers and employees to neither discuss or debate politics or religion. Because of the rule, I believe friendships have lasted for decades.

Since politics and religion were never discussed or debated, the list of other issues have led to many arguments that we talk about to this day.

The following are samples of issues discussed, and argued, that led to hurt feelings and fights.

My favorite debate to hear was, whether the 1967 World Series St. Louis Baseball Cardinals being the best ever team to win the Cardinal’s eleven championships. The Archie comic book character Veronica being better than Betty

The debate of whether actress Earth Kitt being the best “Cat Woman” during the 60’s Batman series or the first Ali and Frazier fight being the greatest heavy weight fight ever

And the debate of whether the Pet Rock and mood rings were the fore runner ideas before the Chia Pet and my favorite, was were the Cabbage patch dolls a rip off of Raggedy Ann & Andy.

I can only imagine the violence I would have been exposed to if politics and religion were discussed.

    So true.
Religion and politics are always dangerous subjects, even amongst friends.
Sometimes sport can be as well particularly if you live in a 2 team town like I do.
As I’m from Australia I find a good topic changer when I get on dangerous ground is to say “My, isn’t New Guinea an interesting shape”.

This problem delves into an even deeper chasm with social media. I’m liberal and my family is far right conservative….it’s never a good mix! I try to not discuss such topics but sometimes I just can’t keep my mouth shut. 🙂
