Southwestern National monument destinations

Pssst, here’s a travel destination secret.

It has always been suggested to visit iconic U. S. National Parks like the Grand Canyon during the early spring or late fall to avoid the crowds arriving before 7 am is a must but during these times of a World Pandemic.

Apparently everyone did the same as mentioned in my last blog post, “Visiting and old friend.” I felt a little uncomfortable with the large crowds, and returned to the car and on my way pass the front gate, I passed 2-3 miles of cars waiting to enter, I felt better about my visit and my decision to leave around 10 am.

However, during my drive back to the KOA in Flag Staff, AZ. I stopped along route 180 to check the map when I noticed a couple of possible destinations I could visit.

The first was the Wupatki National Monument, a protected area with self-guided tours with walking trails to view prehistoric pueblos.

The second is The Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument that erupted around the year 1085.

These two location were not crowded at all, allowing for a leisurely tour. There are many such destination to visit with a little research and consideration for alternative destinations alway bringing pleasant surprises for any and all travelers.

Two great spots! I checked them off my bucket list in January. Was cool to see sunset crater and the lava flows blanketed in snow.

I’m planning a trip to capture photos in the winter time to catch that scene.
